Olive oil from Nablus

Palestine is the place of origin of the olive tree with some of the oldest olive groves in the world, some even dating back as far as 1500 to 2000 years. In the West Bank 75% of all the fruit trees are olive trees, which is 222.400 acre.

Annually 15000 to 30000 tons of olive oil is produced, it is an export product of the West Bank it, providing 70000 families. Before the second intifada (2000), olive oil was exported from the West Bank to Israel. But since that date, the Israeli market has been closed and the wall has been constructed around the West Bank, so that the stocks are accumulating and the rates keep decreasing.
This situation disencourages the farmers, they neglect their trees and do not harvest all of them.

The main kind of olive tree which grows in Palestine is “Nabali Baladi”, it is a local kind, which is also called Romani, it refers to the fact that they are ancient trees. One can also find the “Sawri” and different sub-kinds such as “Eirsesi”, “Beidi” and “Hawari”.
